The machines now come with a Group Head Controller (GHC). It gives you real-time control over flow and pressure during an espresso. It allows you to control all the functions - espresso, steam, hot water - directly by touching. And, in fact, it allows you to run the espresso machine completely autonomously without the tablet. Now, most of the time you're going to use the tablet, because it gives you a lot of useful features. The tablet lets you program the espresso that you're about to make. Without the tablet, the GHC allows you to just make the last espresso style over and over and over again. So if you're making the same espresso, you don't need the tablet. However, the tablet does show you pressure, flow and any defects that are happening while you're making your espresso. So that can be quite useful.
New to version 1.3 is the ability to stop an espresso without a scale. Now, it does this by tracking the amount of water liquid that goes into the cup after pre-infusion. So when the puck is saturated, it now counts the amount of water going through the puck. This allows you to make espresso much easier because you don't have a scale getting in the way.
There's a new USB cable and we've moved the cable here above the group head.
The tablet has been upgraded to Android 8.1. It's got double the memory and double the speed CPU.
The drip tray cover is new in this version; it's now made out of stainless steel and it's welded. Previously, it was made out of aluminum. The stainless steel version is much more long-lasting.
We've optimized the group head so that it's really easy to lock it in, like so.
The fan is now silent and only turns on when needed, which is only if you're making a ton of espressos.
Steam has been re-engineered so that it's even more powerful; we have a 1500 watt heater in this new model. The previous models were at 1350 watts. That gets you about 15% faster steaming. We've also engineered the steaming so it's even higher-pressure and even drier.
Because this model has the new group head controller, you're only turning on any coffee-making functions by tapping buttons. So the button no longer says Start, it says Ready. And in order to make an espresso, you tap on the group head controller itself. You can, however, stop any function either by tapping the center button or by touching the stop button on the tablet.
